CNN 뉴스에서 본 한국의 투표 모습(자랑스러운 우리)

 

어제 다들 투표는 잘하셨나요? 코로나 때문에 모두가 잔뜩 움츠러든 이런 때에도 전국 투표율이 66.2%에 달하는 수치가 나왔다고 하니... '우리나라 사람들 참 대단하다!' 란 생각이 들었어요. 정말 우리 스스로 자부심을 가질만한 충분한 자격을 가진 것 같아요. 물론 아직 나아졌으면 하는 부분들도 많은 것도 사실이지만 해외를 나가봐도 이제는 다른 나라들이 우리보다 더 좋다는 생각이 크게 들지 않은 것 같아요. 웬만한 시설이나 볼거리도 다 갖추어져 있고, 사람들의 생각이나 태도도 많이 성숙해졌다는 생각이 들어요.

외국 언론에서도 다들 우리나라를 주목한다고 하죠? 코로나에 대응하는 자세도 그렇고 사재기 없는 굉장히 이상한 국가라는 소개도 하고요. 어제 cnn에서 코로나 팬더믹(대유행) 상황에서 투표가 예정되로 진행되는 한국에 대해 소개했다고 해서 저도 관심을 가지고 기사를 찾아봤어요.

South Koreans head to polls despite coronavirus outbreak

Voters in masks and gloves, disinfected polling booths, and spaces between people as they queue up to vote. It's election day in South Korea during the coronavirus pandemic.

 

South Korea is the first country with a significant outbreak to hold a nationwide election since the pandemic began, which has infected at least 10,560 people in South Korea alone. But South Korea's government has won praise for its handling of the crisis, and already more than 7,500 people in the country have recovered.

(우리나라가 코로나 대유행 이후로 전국적인 선거를 치루는 첫 번째 나라라고 하며 최소 10,560명의 사람들이 코로나에 감염되었지만 위기를 잘 다룬 한국 정부에 대해 찬사를 보내고 있다는 점, 그리고 이미 7,500명 이상의 사람들이 회복되었다는 내용을 담고 있어요. )

At Seoul's Samseon-dong polling station, stickers on the ground outside indicated where voters should stand so that they are spaced at least one meter (three feet) apart from one another as they queue up to cast their ballot. At the door, voters are handed masks and gloves and a polling station officer takes their temperature. Anyone with a temperature of more than 37.5 degrees Celsius (99.5 degrees Farenheit) is required to vote in a special booth. While all polling booths are regularly disinfected.

(투표소 밖의 바닥에는 사람들의 거리를 1m이상 유지할 수 있게 바닥에 스티커를 붙여놓은 것부터 투표소 입구에서 마스크를 끼고 장갑을 받은 유권자들이 체온을 재는 과정을 거친 뒤, 혹 체온이 37.5도가 넘는 사람들을 위한 특별 부스가 마련되었다는 것,  투표소가 정기적으로 소독되고 있는 점도 알려주고 있어요.)

There are also special precautions for those who are sick with coronavirus or quarantined at home. Voting booths have been set up at government-run isolation centers. Initially, those under self-quarantine were unable to vote, but the authorities have introduced provisions meaning they will be allowed to leave their house to vote after polling booths close to the public at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

(코로나에 걸린 확자들이나 자가 격리자를 위한 특별한 예방수칙이 마련되었고 처음엔 자가 격리자가 투표를 할 수 없었지만 당국이 오후 6시 이후에 그들에게 투표를 할 수 있도록 조치를 취했다는 것도 소개하고 있어요.)

Expert warns that voting during a pandemic may result in a lower turnout, as voters may be too concerned for their health to head to the polls. But voters CNN talked to ahead of the election were supportive of the decision to go ahead, and some said the pandemic made voting even more important.

(많은 전문가들이 팬더믹 상황에서 투표율이 낮아질 거라고 경고했던 것과는 달리 유권자들은 투표장에 기꺼이 가기를 원했고 이런 상황이 투표하는 것을 더 중요하게 만들었다는 유권자의 말도 전하고 있어요.)

이런 나라에서 살고 있는 우리 좀 자랑스럽지 않나요?

물론 바깥에서 우리를 바라보는 시선이 중요한 것은 아니지만 요즘 국내 언론에서 미처 잡아주지 못하고 평가해주지 못하는 것들을 잘 조명해주고 있다는 생각이 들었어요. 우린 우리가 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 더 멋진 사람들일 수 있는 것 같습니다.
